PLANTAR FASCITIS / HEEL SPUR SYNDROME
Definition: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the long plantar ligament on the bottom of the foot. This may come as a result of an injury or a constant inflammation. The plantar fasciia is a thick fibrous material on the bottom of the foot attached to the heel bone fanning forward toward the toes and acting like a bowstring to maintain the arch of the foot. When this is repeatedly placed under tension it becomes inflamed at the point where the fasciia is attached to the heel bone. After long periods of this a spur may produce spike-like projections called heel spurs.
We believe that 96% of all heel pain in non-surgical. Conservative measures most commonly include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), biomechanical control using tape, over-the-counter insoles or custom-made orthotics, and stretching. Occasionally, injections of steroid preparations or surgery may be required.
